Overview

Hot Springs Hiking Trip with Boulder City Outfitters

Travel down a spectacular volcanic canyon to the Colorado River.Just below Hoover Dam,relax and soak in pleasant hot springs in a nearby side canyon. This backcountry trip is our most relaxing! Enjoy a morning of exploration in White Rock Canyon, a strikingly beautiful volcanic area. This canyon gets its name from a huge white boulder that was carried down the canyon by a flash flood. (Exact time of that flood is not known). We will make our way through narrow slot canyons, keeping watch for ancient Indian rock art and petroglyphs on the steep cliff faces. We will hear the rustle of ground squirrels and cotton tail rabbits, hiding in the shade of a creosote bush. Desert Bighorn Sheep make their home in the canyon, and are often spotted roaming lazily on the hillsides and sharp edges. The breeze drifts by and a red-tail hawk circles overhead.

Hot Springs Hiking Trip

There is a wide variety of desert plants to be found, including indigo bush, rush-milkweed, Mormon tea, globe mallow, rock daisy, brittle bush, and desert rock nettle. One of our experienced guides will explain geological formations encountered along the trail such as petrified wood, and fault lines. Collared lizards scurry about, and an occasional chuckwalla can be seen confined in a small crack.

Rest stops along the way will provide us a chance to refuel and hydrate. After a brief stop to enjoy a trail bar and an energy drink, we will continue on our journey. As we approach the mouth of the canyon and make our way onto White Rock beach, the mighty Colorado River comes into view. Mallard ducks float in its cool waters, and coyotes sometimes roam the beach, scavenging for morsels and crumbs of food. Here, we take a moment to dip our tired feet in the refreshing water, and enjoy our picnic lunch in the silence of Black Canyon. As we sit on the rocks, kayakers paddle by, launched from the base of the massive Hoover Dam.

When our feet and body are ready for warmer waters, our guide will lead us up the short trail to the hot springs. A narrow slot canyon reveals the beginnings of a stream. As we scramble over basalt worn smooth, the first pools present themselves. Tiny little pools of running water which have made their mark in the volcanic rock. The water in the springs is full of healthy minerals and the warmth of the water holds its own healing properties. Additional hot springs lie beyond these; situated in the tall cliffs and promising warmer temperatures with each step. Sit and soak as a sliver of sky peeks through the roof of the canyon, gently blanketing us with rays of sunlight.

After a relaxing soak in the pools, our guide will prepare us for the 3 mile trek out of the canyon. Once back at the trailhead, we can take it easy while traveling back toward civilization in an air conditioned vehicle. Finish off this remarkable wilderness adventure with a nice view of Lake Mead and the Colorado River while passing over the Hoover Dam.

Itinerary

Hot Springs Hiking Trip

Hot Springs Hiking Trip with Boulder City Outfitters

The Arizona Hot Springs consist of groundwater that is heated at depth by contact with molten rock and moves to the surface through faults at the rate of 400 gallons per minute. The water temperature is between 85 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It is highly mineralized containing chloride, sulphate, sodium, potassium, calcium, and fluoride

The best season for backcountry trips is November through March when temperatures are lower. The hot springs are especially enjoyable in the winter months, when outside air temperatures cool down. Hiking during the day time in the summer months is not recommended since temperatures can reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade. During the heat of summer, we encourage you to try one of our kayak adventures instead, where you can escape sizzling temperatures in exchange for chilly waters.

Rest assured you are in good hands. Our guides are experts in these canyons, and can cater to all levels of experience and ability. Our guided trips are arranged to be enjoyable for all abilities and skill levels. If you would like to inquire about the availability of a hike, please call our office. We will gladly answer any questions you may have.

Boulder City Outfitters has been conducting guide services, boat rentals as well as wilderness trips on the Lower Colorado River for over 14 years. We are the oldest company operating on this section of the Southwest and Las Vegas so you can rest assured that you will be dealing with the best in the business!
